Behind the Decks: DJ Eric Talks About the Scarlett's Miami Nightlife Experience
Scarlett's Miami is not just a strip club, it’s an atmosphere where the lines between high-energy nightclub and gentleman’s club seamlessly blend. As part of this hybrid experience, the sound system and the DJs play a huge role in setting the vibe. We sat down with DJ Eric Noel, who has been part of Scarlett's for years, to hear his take on what makes his DJing style unique, his thoughts on the club’s iconic atmosphere, and what keeps the crowd coming back for more.
How would you describe your DJing style? Do you focus more on smooth transitions, mashups, or creating a specific vibe?
I AM A DJ SNOB... I am a very technical DJ. I focus quite a bit on the natural transition and pay attention to tons of details. The bass lines are my focus, followed by a known vocal. However, that's about it when it comes to familiar sounds. I spend countless hours at home scouring the web for remixes that are different enough to give my set a signature but not too far into a rabbit hole that alienates people.
A good friend worded it: “DJs like us walk a fine line that is too commercial for the underground and not commercial enough for pop culture. But we have our signature that pleases both crowds.”
My vibe is specific to the environment. I cannot say my opening shift sets are the same energy and style as my overnight sets, and my mid-shift sets are not as aggressive as my overnight sets.
It’s my job to set the right mood, and I must be smart at doing it.
Scarlett's is known for sparing no expense when it comes to the sound system. What’s your favorite piece of tech in the DJ booth?
We have a pretty standard setup, so I can’t say I have a favorite piece of equipment. I am a firm believer that a DJ SHOULD BE ABLE TO PLAY ON ANY EQUIPMENT. You can’t go by me on this answer… but if I really had to choose, I’d say the time-in-and-out computer. Ha-ha.
Can you share a memorable moment or performance from your time at Scarlett's that stood out?
There are too many to remember. After nine years, five days a week, there are just so many moments that it’s hard to choose. Some really wonderful times where I got to spend time with managers in my hobby, and other sad times that brought the club staff together.
DJing non-stop for hours sounds intense, how do you manage bathroom breaks during a packed night?
It’s part of the job! I mean, you just go when you can. That’s the reality of it.
How do you handle nights when the crowd is a little tougher to get going? Any tricks for hyping them up?
I stick to my guns, tweak my formula, and keep trying different ideas until something works. Yup, my system is that simple: Keep It Simple Stupid (K.I.S.S.).
What advice would you give to someone looking to break into DJing at high energy clubs like Scarlett’s?
More than energy, refine your skill and be unique. But equally understand that it’s not about being the center of attention. You are part of a team and need to fit the formula. No superstars, we’re there for the guests.
If you could create the ultimate club night with no restrictions, what would it look like, theme, music, special effects, anything?
Now, why would I give away my concept of what I one day am hoping to build myself? Investors, I am always up to talk… Hahaha… If you know me, you know exactly the type of venue I would open. I’ll give all my original South Beach partygoers a hint: One type of venue would be a Tantric Haven (IYKYK, two names in one there). Another concept I absolutely loved that was sadly shut down due to political issues was a club called “House” in Wynwood during the 2010s. Again, investors… I’m game to talk, haha.
What do you think makes Scarlett’s nightlife experience stand out from other clubs in Miami?
Scarlett’s was first to the game with this concept. We set the standard for the nightclub and gentleman’s club. I remember when I started DJing in high school, this was the spot to be at and DJ at. Now, here I am, being part of the legacy.
Thank you, Eric, for your thoughts. You can catch DJ Eric mixing top dance hits that get the staff, entertainers, and guests going all night long.
